This is one of the latest apps available in the wonderful Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter series brought to the iPad by Oceanhouse Media. I have happily read many of the Little Critter books to my son when he was younger and am excited to discover more and more are being released in ebook form. I love that we can now easily take many Little Critter titles with us on the go on our family iPad.
Just Going to the Dentist – Little Critter deals with a trip to the dentist. It is the perfect app to introduce to your child before the first and/or returning trips to the dentist.
I found this app to be great. My son recently had a trip to the dentist for his biannual checkup. He had a bad experience on his last visit unfortunately and this app I felt really helped to prepare him for a return visit. He had been very apprehensive. The app helped to calm him down and talk him through the whole process.
The dental office is introduced with the waiting room, other patients, the dental nurse, dentist chair and bib, a teeth cleaning and x-rays.
The dentist examines Little Critter’s teeth and discovers a cavity that needs to be fixed. He receives an injection and the dentist drills and fixes his tooth. Little Critter learns that going to the dentist isn’t so bad.
There is a choice of a “read to me†or “read it myself†feature. Highlighted narration is used in the read to me version. There is also a record your own voice feature too.
If the user taps any word it is instantly highlighted in blue text and repeated. The user can also tap parts of the illustration to see additional animation and identify what the object is – great fun and a wonderful tool for building and expanding vocabulary. My son found a set of false teeth for a tiger that he found hilarious!
To make the book even more enjoyable and engaging there is even a fun scavenger hunt type game. The user during the course of “reading†the story can search for frogs and spiders. At the end there is a tally for the amount of spiders and frogs found.
If you are familiar with other wonderful apps by Oceanhouse Media you will know the quality of their apps and Just Going to the Dentist – Little Critter does not fail to deliver either. Overall this app serves as a fantastic way to prepare your child for a trip to the dentist. You won’t be disappointed. Recommend.
