It’s time! Get your cleats tied up and head to the soccer field. Of course I mean a virtual field created by Virtual Speech Center with their app titled Sentence Workout. It is a great app that focuses on sentence structure in both the written (receptive) and oral (expressive) formats.

Set up is similar to the other apps in the Virtual Speech Center family. It is done by tapping on “Start” on the main screen and then the orange “Add Student” button. A dialogue box appears that requires you to enter the student’s name and tap on “Save”. You will then be prompted to select the appropriate student(s) from the student list. After the student(s) have been selected, it is necessary to tap “Next” in the upper right hand corner. Then you will be prompted to select the activity (sentence type) that will be focused on for each user. There are three hundred and fifty sentences with thirty seven different sentence structures with approximately ten pages of each sentence type. You also need to pick which of the two different activities (Say it or Build Your Sentence) that will be worked on.

The “Say it” activities focus on expressive language. Users are presented with an image and hear a question prompt. They are expected to answer the question in a complete sentence using correct syntax. Students record their response and play it back with the built in record and playback features in the app. Then together with their parent or speech language pathologist they rate the response as correct or incorrect.

Receptive language skills can be addressed by choosing the “Build a Sentence” activity. In this activity, students are asked to drag and drop sentence parts together to make a complete sentence about the image seen on the screen. Students have the opportunity to record and playback their production of the sentence too. Struggling readers are also supported as the words on the sentence blocks are stated when tapped on.

After a predetermined number (5-10) of trials have been completed, the user is allowed to head to the soccer stadium for a reward. They are greeted by their soccer coach and allowed to shoot soccer balls at a goal that is being defended by a goalie for eight seconds. Shots are taken by using your finger to “flick” the ball at the goal.

When your session is complete you can access a session report that lists the date, student’s name, skill worked on, and percentage correct. A more comprehensive report is available by tapping on “Reports” on the main screen. You will need to select the user and the skill for which you want data. Then you are able to view the data by activity or date. All reports are printable or they can be emailed.

Some customization is available by accessing the “Settings” features.  These features are:

• Enable Reward
• Award Counter

I did not get the opportunity to use this app with any of my students because the school year came to an end but I am positive it will be a huge hit next fall as they loved other apps by the Virtual Speech Center. Also anything with a sports theme is also usually an instant hit with my students.

The Virtual Speech Center has done it again! They have another new app on the market. This time the focus is on prepositions; a topic that is very familiar to speech language pathologists.

Preposition Journey is similar to the other apps in the Virtual Speech Center family. It contains an extensive description of the app and a clearly written set of instructions on how to use the app. These are accessible from the opening screen of the app by tapping on the “Info” button.

The app is also customizable by tapping the “Settings” button.  The features you are able to customize are:

• Enable Audio
• User Alternate Count
• Automatic Paging
• Random Paging
• Correct Sound
• Incorrect Sound

Set up is similar to the other apps in the Virtual Speech Center family. It is done by tapping on “Start” on the main screen and then the “Add Student” button. After the student(s) have been selected, it is necessary to tap “Next” in the upper right hand corner. Then you will be prompted to make a choice of scene (Lake Camping, Island, or City), whether you would like a receptive or an expressive task and what prepositions you will focus on.

The focus of the receptive tasks is on locating a variety of animals in various positions in the scenes. E.g. “Show me the rabbit above the hammock.”  Users are expected to tap on the animal they believe best shows the preposition stated. The preposition will be restated if the user taps on the green curved arrow in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Percentage correct is located in the lower right hand corner also.

While during the expressive tasks, the users are expected to answer a where question about the scene that features animals in various positions on the screen.  E.g. “Where is the fox?”  The users response should be recorded and played back to evaluate correctness. This can be done by using the record and playback features located in the lower right hand corner. Data on these responses can be recorded by tapping on the correct (green check) and incorrect (red x) symbols located on the lower right hand side of the app.

Preposition Journey has twenty prepositions to chosen from. The prepositions include in, on , under, next to, in front of, behind, in the back, between, above, below, beside, in the middle, outside, out, over, near, far, on the side, on the left, on the right

Preposition Journey is another quality tool to work on prepositions using iOS technology. However, I noticed that it is missing the WOW factor of a built in reward for working hard that many of the other Virtual Speech Center apps have.

• It is missing the reward activity that is present in many of the other Virtual Speech Center apps. This helps to keep the kids motivated to participate.
• A wider variety of scenes.

I haven’t seen a Smarty Ears app that I don’t like and Phono Learning Center is no exception. This isn’t your run of the mill articulation app. Phono Learning Center is a well thought out, highly engaging app that is based on Barbra W. Hodson’s cycles approach. It is designed for the student whose conversational speech contains multiple errors and is unintelligible to most listeners.

Phono Learning Center is compatible with the iPad and requires iOS 5.0 or later. It is designed to be used with single or multiple users in a group setting. Student set up is similar to other Smarty Ears apps. Students can be entered individually by clicking on “Add Player” and entering their name and choosing a picture or avatar or by importing this information from Therapy Report Center.

During the set up process you will be asked to customize each student’s profile. This is done on the “Add New Student” screen. You will need to turn “Auditory Bombardment” on or off. This feature is only accessible when a single user is accessing the app if it is turned on. It is also necessary to individualize each students Primary, Secondary, and Advanced targets and if they will be worked on at the word, phrase, or sentence level.

When you access the settings feature which is located in the upper hand corner of the student set up screen, you are able to customize the app further. The additional customization features are:

• Display written word
• Audio
• Restrict app use based on cycle’s framework
• Scoring style
  • Standard
  • Levels of prompts

There are four different activities located in the app. The first activity is called “Balloon.” Students see a hot air balloon deflated in a field. They are required to drag and drop the picture which contains the targeted phoneme into the balloons basket. With ever card that is placed in the basket the balloon grows larger and larger until it finally floats off of the screen.

Matching is the next activity. This isn’t your typical matching game. Students are presented with a card that contains a picture of the targeted phoneme and they are expected to find its match from eight cards upside down on the screen.

The third activity is titled Basket Paper. It is a take-off on garbage can basketball that has been played for centuries in school room around the world. Students are presented with a sheet of paper containing a picture. The paper can be crumpled by tapping on it and shot in the basket by swiping a finger on the screen.

Last but not least is a puzzle activity. Students are presented a blank puzzle on a mat. They are given puzzle pieces with their targeted phoneme. They place them one at a time onto the blank puzzle and picture starts to magically appear on the screen.

You can choose to terminate a work session at anytime. Once the session has been terminated you will be able to access comprehension reports in the “Report Card” section of the app. Data will be available in either the “Standard Scoring Style” or the “Prompts Style” based on your choice when setting up the individual users.

A feature that I love is located in the “Support” section of the app. A button called “Homework” is available. It allows you to access a homework file based on the phoneme and level that is being worked on. The homework is automatically generated and can be printed or emailed to the student’s parents to work on outside of the therapy setting.

Phono Learning Center is a great tool for educational speech language pathologists. It is a research driven tool that the kids will love. You can’t go wrong. It is well worth the money you invest in it.

Tactus Therapy Solutions has given us what we’ve been asking for! Their newest app Conversation TherAppy is a high quality app that focuses on pragmatic and problem solving skills for students’ ages nine and up. It can be used on either the iPad or iPhone with one or multiple users. There is a six user maximum on the iPad and a four user max on the iPhone.

Getting started will require you to enter your students into the app. Students can be entered two different ways. The first way is by tapping on the users tab on the left side of the opening screen. Your second option is by tapping on the User Hub button. Either way you will be prompted to add the student’s name, any notes you have about the student and choose what type of questions you would like the student to work on. There are ten types of questions to choose from and you may choose any number of them. The choices include: describing, define, remember, decide, feel, infer, predict, narrate, evaluate, and brainstorm.

Once set up has been completed, you will be prompted to choose a category. The categories present are; activities, arts & culture, environment, family, food, health, money & politics, safety & problems, social problems, society, and violence. After the category choice has been made users will be presented with a photograph and the question icons around it. The number of question icons will vary based on what was chosen during the set up process. The first time the question icon is tapped, it will provide a question to help spark a conversation. Tap it a second time and it will tell you the type of question and you can create your own.

With an individual user, data is taken by tapping the lights at the top of the screen (green – correct, red – incorrect, and yellow – approximate). Group data is taken in a similar manner expect that you need to make sure you are scoring the data on the tab with the individuals name.

A session can be ended at any time. It is done by tapping on the home button the screen. That session’s data will automatically appear on the screen. More comprehensive data can be accessed on each user by tapping on the User Hub on the opening screen. This data can be viewed in graph format also by tapping on the appropriate button. All data can be quickly emailed out.

The settings feature is located in the upper right hand corner of the opening screen. It allows you to customize the set up to meet your user’s needs. Things you are able to customize are:

• Number of trials – ( 5, 10, 20, 30, All)
• Content – (Child, Teen, Adult)
• Scoring Sounds – (Default, Clicks, None)
• Email Results To
• Links
• Customize Database – (Customize the questions asked in each category)

Tactus Therapy also provides wonderful support for Conversation TherAppy. A comprehensive set of instructions on how to use the app can be accessed by tapping on the Information button. It is clearly written and easy to follow. If the written instructions aren’t enough, check out the tutorial. It takes you step by step through how to maximize the use of the app. It can be accessed by tapping on tutorial on the opening screen.

Conversation TherAppy is AWESOME! It will be used regularly in my program as it is so versatile and appealing to the older students. You can check it out for free by downloading the Lite version. The lite version has full functionality but only contain one percent of the content. Now you don’t have any excuse to see if this app is what your students/clients need.
